The Gardening Year Jul 2023

What to do now - July

At this time of the year, lawns will benefit from regular mowing to keep the grass neat and tidy. Mow your lawn little and often so that you are simply topping the new growth which will help to keep the grass green. Avoid scalping the lawn at all costs and in dry weather, raise the height of the cut slightly. Feeding with a summer lawn fertiliser will also help to keep the grass in top condition.

Roses should also be in full flower now and with a little care and attention will produce attractive blooms all summer long. Regular deadheading is essential to encourage new rose buds to develop and we recommend that this is done with a small pair of secateurs such as our Straight Pruning Snips. Simply snip off the individual rose flowers as they fade. The more often you carry out this simple and easy task, the more rose flowers you will get.

Quick tips:

  • Use a Lawn Rake to aerate the lawn and remove any debris
  • Clean up dead leaves from under rose bushes using our Plastic Leaf Rake to prevent the spread of pests and disease
  • Keep your tools in good condition by cleaning them regularly and sharpening with our Garden Tool Sharpener
  • Harvest seeds as soon as they are ready
